Over the last few years we’ve seen an increase in sales of hardtails here at Worcester Cycle Centre – at all price points – so we thought a round up of the best of the bunch was needed.
Both 29″ and 27.5″ wheels sizes are now established with the main brands and geometry has evolved too – adding confidence and improved control in tricky terrain. We’ve seen tyre volume and size increasing too, with 2.8″ tyres now a big seller on 27.5″ wheel trail hardtails and lighter duty 2.3″ rubber a sound choice on mile-eating 29″ wheel XC bikes. With a move to simpler and lighter drivetrains (single and double ring chain sets are now common place) these bikes are lighter and quieter in the rough with less chance of dropping the chain. The sum of these developments allow you to push these bikes with bigger tyres into more challenging terrain than ever before with more comfort as well as control – just make sure you switch to more aggressive rubber for mud use and experiment with lower air pressures too. For local trail riding, multi-surface use and bikepacking the long legged nature of the 29″ wheel hardtails means versatility comes as standard. It’s good news all round regardless of your riding style or choice of wheel size – the hardtail is back and is better than ever…
